The art of massage therapy has been around for many centuries and is considered one of the oldest forms of medical treatment. Massage therapy is known to reduce stress, reduce or eliminate both chronic an acute pain, and has also sped recovery from surgery, injury, or illness. The comfort and healing of the human touch can increase blood flow, and through massage, bring more oxygen and nutrition to your body's cells, and it creates a sense of calm and well-being. These changes in the body have been recorded in medical journal.

But the human touch is not always available or affordable on a consistent basis. And when there is a need, humans are one of the most innovative creatures on the planet... thus the massage chair was invented.

Yes, although a massage chair does not look like a robot, if you look beneath the exterior covering you would see they are comprised of moving nodes, gears, and modules plus other robotic equipment... just like a robot.

Massage chairs are run by electricity, are fully automated and respond to input from the user. So although you may not have thought that a massage chair was a robot, when you look beneath the surface you can see many similarities. You can even call your experiment robotic massage chair project!

Now for the fun part....here are some easy to do 1st prize medicine-health science fair projects that will win you applause and honors at your science fair:

  1. High school: Approach a massage chair store owner in your community. Ask if you can do a massage chair science fair project using his equipment after store hours or whenever it is convenient. Tell him you will be respectful of his merchandise. Or, if you have a massage chair at home you can use that one. And he will be able to publish your findings which will help him to sell more chairs!

Also approach a massage therapist or massage therapy school for your science project. (At many schools the students must do free massages for their classes.)

Ask for volunteers - friends, parents, teachers. Test their blood pressure before they sit in the massage chair for 20 minutes. (Each participant must sit in the same chair or the same model chair and vibrate at the same frequency for the same amount of time.) Then take each person's blood pressure immediately after their massage experience.

Have the same people get a massage from a massage therapist for 20 minutes. Take their blood pressure before and immediately following the massage. Be sure and tell each massage therapist that they have to do the same kind of massage, massaging the same area of the body. Have all the participants stay dressed for this experiment if children (anyone under the age of 18) is participating in the experiment). Remember, all participants must be either dress or undressed, so it is best for all to be dressed.

What lowered their blood pressure more, the human touch or the massage chair?

  2. Middle School or High School: Take everyone's pulse before and after their chair massage experience.

Have each person sit in two different kinds of massage chairs for a specific amount of time:

Example: Shiatsu massage chair recliner for 20 minutes on one day and Takasima massage chair for 20 minutes on another day.

Which one slowed down a person's pulse to a resting state more effectively?

Massage therapy has a lot of benefits, including improved skin condition, stress relief, and stimulation of the lymphatic system, which improves the removal of toxins from your body. Your experiment for massage chair science fair projects may show additional benefits, as well as making all who participate in chair massage happier, healthier, and a little less stress-free.
